The most interesting for me were the two workshops – one related to Rethink:KAU about shaping digital tools to facilitate the learning process for students with impairments and a second one on designing courses with the ABC method. In the case of the first workshop, it was interesting to step in somebody else’s shoes and learn about problems and possible solutions for students with impairments. It was a creative exercise and an opportunity to look at the learning process from different angles. The second workshop was a hands-on session on course development with the ABC method. I find it challenging and very useful to look at the course design from a different perspective, a more top-down approach in selecting the activities and the assessment moments. I liked this approach and I would like to continue using this method in the future.

I thought that the lectures were interesting, especially the one about assessing competencies. Coming from an exact discipline, I rarely think about this aspect. When I think about assessment, I usually think about knowledge. But also in exact disciplines there are competencies to be assessed, for example when it comes to writing or presenting. I often see that in such cases we focus more on the content than on how this is delivered. I found interesting the idea that the examiner develops an intuition about how he or she should asses competencies, but I find it also difficult to justify such a way. The bottom line was that a combination of clear assessment criteria and instinct based on experience would offer a good package in the end.

Another interesting idea during another lecture was the feedback through recorded video. I am not sure I will use that, especially since I am not teaching distance students. But I can see how such a tool can be very useful. Spoken feedback is on one hand more nuanced, since it uses also the gestures and voice, rather than just the words. In some cases can be also quicker, provided the teacher is familiar with the technical details of recording. The idea of combining video and text is even better, using each time the most appropriate way of giving feedback. It is the closest one can get to the face-to-face interaction.

I could relate somewhat to the lecture on assessment on advanced level courses, since I am mainly teaching such courses. It was interesting to hear that also in other disciplines the same methods can work or not, depending on the group dynamic among students.

I found a lot of inspiration in this meeting and looking forward to hear and discuss more in the following sessions.

There were a few interesting moments during meeting 3.
