This is a topic that I thoroughly enjoyed learning bout and reflecting on. the scenario that we were presented with, made me think creatively and objectively whilst providing an opportunity to reflect on what I was/m struggling with when it comes to open education.
I took quite a bit away from the webinar with Alistair and Kay and learnt that openness means to A LOT more than just ‘sharing information’ freely.
I think that there is still a lot of power that will be unleashed when everyone starts adapting to open learning and open educational practices.
MOOCs are increasingly being considered by universities as an integral part of their curriculum (Dalipi, Ferati and Kurti, 2018); and whilst I think that worldwide this is becoming a norm, South Africa is slowly starting to recognise the trend and worth in this – especially in light of the most recent political “fees must fall” matter. Several South African universities are adapting to OER and Open Access which I think is phenomenal. The few I have researched including UCT and UNISA are also providing ‘tool kits’ and ‘how to’ information guides for educators and students alike, on ways to share their OERs.
As n educator myself, I would like to continue to explore the endless possibilities of openness, continue to learn bout ways to share and maximize potential and I would like to be able to implement and use the concept at my own institution.
Onward and upward!
