Can education be too open?

Our PBL-Group decided to focus on the aspects of beeing open as a teacher in the digital age.

The challenge of the topic for me was to decide upon a precise focus point. The term “open” is used in many different ways on the educational context i.e. “open source”, “open access”.

Our PBL-group decided to focus on the challenges a teacher has to face, when educating in an open setting. We asked ourself, what kind of changes a teacher has to undergo to become more of a fascilitator. After researching this subject my personal conclusion was, that for an excellent teacher the way of delivery is tailored to the designated outcome. Choosing an open and digital format remains just one of countless other arrows in the quiver of an educator.

The main advantage of an open course over a traditional classroom based event seems to be in the reach of a single educator or group with a comparable amount of effort. In a second step, this might lead to a higher cost-efficiancy from a commercial point of view. There seems to be little on the downsides…when creating a new format, why not deliver something openly for a broader public?

The pensum of taking part in the ONL-Course took its toll on our group. I can totally relate to our collegues to drop out from the course for various reasons. The course is not a light meal, but a lot to stomach. I am very happy to be given the opportunity to take part in this journey. It ist great to watch our small group of random people somehow grow together to a collaborative and functional network. If the progress of collaboration and effectivness continues to evolve over the next couple of weeks with the same effort…let’s see where we reach peak performace.
