This topic has so far been the one which I have been able to relate to most. I am active within several collaborative networks, learning networks etc. These range from everything from a news listserv which sends me mails everyday within my topic. In this network we ask each other questions and also discuss everything from advocacy to medical issues within our field. You have to be invited and an active person within the field. This ensures that knowlegeble people are within the network. In addition I am member of several more passive networks on Instagram, Facebook and linkedin where everyone can post news. However, these groups are then of course only available for anyone with these social media. It is very clear that everyone does not have these social media which excludes a large source of knowledge and sidesteps people of importance…
I realized quickly in this topic that I have a rather extensive personal learning network and that I in fact use my connections within these networks quite extensively. This of course has huge benefits. I feel up to date and I enjoy contributing to others learning and being up to date too. I enjoy discussion and controversy and believe in openness.
However, I have identified a few negative things about extensive personal learning networks.
- People know that you are there and take for granted that you will teach at any time…
- You are bombarded with extensive information and learning opportunities- this creates an ”information stress”. If you do not check your channels you feel as if you have missed tons of information… and learning opportunities.
- In networks which are rather closed you constantly find that your views and opinions are shared with everyone- this creates a perception of ”truth” as seen by the community- ie- you miss conflicting ideas and perception. Your ideas and views of the word are not challenged.
- On the other hand, you are constantly exposed to ”idiots”- who take up your time and effort without ever contributing themselves. Ie- you become a ”donor” of learning- a teacher- rather than also gaining knowledge in that community.
All in all- it is my opinion that expanding a personal learning network is beneficial for any teacher or student or just human being for that matter. However, it needs to be balanced carefully so that it does not take up too much time and consumes you.
Knowledge is infinite- but time to gain knowledge is limited. So, make a limited room for teaching and learning and use that time wisely in the right communities.
