I think that the natives-immigrants typology may have taken the metaphor too far. The web consists of such a huge array of diverse phenomena, which makes it too complex for such a dichotomy. For instance, while my children are much better at using Snapchat and pokemon go than I am, I am far better at LinkedIn and ResearchGate (although not as good as I probably should be :)). The resident-visitor continuum seems better but may also suffer from over-simplification. I guess that one could be a resident in some aspect and in some media and a visitor in others.
