The topic at hand raises pertinant points in relation to to how does one look at it in todays Education world and beyond. We all know the vagries of it but how does one tackle the topic at hand. The question “What are the opportunities and dangers of “going open”?, can be seen in such a way that one must look to share content and new ways of learning new skills, new learners in different platforms and the new world of educating and growing the skills base of industries. When we look at the detail in the parameters of what is open learning or others, we can see, once the open learning platforms were the vogue, it was seen as a new way of learning and deliverance of the content and of new skills. Over the period of time, we can see that it has stagnated and not moved onto the next level and beyond. Why this is so, it could be the audience, the facilitators or the platform in question was not backed by the neccessary procedures of Educational administration and relevant technology of the day.
We can all share as much content as we wish in programmes, short learning or any recognised courses, but to be open and sharing can, have its hazards. This can be seen in our discussions in our group around how the open earning/sharing viewpoints can be used with vigour or it can one of nervousness as to the validity and the extent to which the sharing will occur. In our group we have views of there is a relaxed view of sharing and openess whilst others are regulated and in some instances prohibited to share in a meaningfull way. In Europe, legislation is at the forfront of ensuring the degree of openess and sharing is readily controlled and put into context of what should and what should not be laid bear to the students, lectures and public at large.
The issue of technology, being exposed and used for ill gotton gains, is at the forefront of the thoughts of the day. A example of this is Google+, which will be closing down in the months to come as this platform of information is being used for unscrupulus means and not for the manner in which it was designed or expected to be. This then opens up the issue around sharing/openess, as to how far and by how much, you go to0! My opinion is yes, we must be able to do Open Learning, but it must be doen in controlled enviroment, correct parameters, correct technology and the correct context within the guided goals and objectives in the Open Education space, in question. It will still play a roll in advancing skills development of the day and of the future.
